Abstract
717,957. Manufacture of iron. KOCKS, F. Dec. 5, 1952 [Dec. 8, 1951], No 30964/52. Class 72 A process for the manufacture of iron directly from iron ores using molten high carbon iron as the reducing agent in an electrically heated furnace comprises adding a mixture of iron ore and slag-forming materials to the molten iron at the rate at which they are consumed, and tapping the iron slag continuously or periodically, the carbon content of the molten iron being maintained by the solution of one or more carbon rods which dip into the metal and are not connected to any source off electric current. As shown, the ore and slag forming materials are fed into the furnace through openings 18, 19 on to the surface of molten iron 20. A carbon rod 21 having its end below the surface of the metal is dissolved and maintains the carbon content of the iron sufficiently high to reduce the ore. The rod may be raised while ore is added to reduce the carbon content to a desired value and then the metal may be tapped or high carbon metal may be tapped continuously and later refined to the required carbon content. An induction furnace may be used.
