Abstract
High-carbon ferro-manganese is produced from ore containing oxides of manganese, iron, calcium and silicon the ore being passed to the surface of a molten slag bath in an electric furnace in the form of a hot, calcined substantially constant composition charge with a controlled amount of solid carbonaceous reducing agent and being smelted at a temperature in the range 1300 DEG C. to 1500 DEG C. The charge is so composed that the slag contains a small amount of calcium carbide and contains silica and basic oxides (excluding manganese oxides) in the ratio of 1 molecule of silica to 1.7-2.2 molecules of basic oxide. The arc tips of the electrodes are maintained from about 1/2 inch above the upper surface of the slag bath to about 3 inches below it. The depth of slag is controlled to give a substantially constant resistance and the charge is introduced at such a rate and in such a direction as to avoid submergance of the arcing tips beneath the raw charge material. The calcium carbide may be added as such to the slag or formed therein by reaction of lime with a sufficient excess of carbonaceous material. Iron may be added to the charge as scrap metal or as iron oxide. Specification 762,469 is referred to.
