Abstract
262,126. Gustafsson, E. G. T. Nov. 28, 1925, [Convention date]. Extracting.-In a process for producing malleable iron and steel in a closed electric furnace, 'the quantity of reducing agent, consisting wholly or partially of carbonaceous material, added during the first part of the smelting operation is less than that theoretically required for the complete reduction of the ore and during the latter portion of the smelting a further quantity of reducing agent is supplied so that the total quantity of reducing agent is in excess of that theoretically required for the reduction of the ore simultaneously supplied, and the desired carbon content of the product is obtained. The second supply of carbonaceous material is fed into the furnace on to the slag bath for the purpose of reducing the metal oxide in the slag and also carbonizing the metal produced by the first part of the smelting process, which is carried out by the process described in Specification 262,127. When producing iron or steel low in phosphorus from an ore rich in phosphorus, the shortness of the carbon in the charge is arranged so as to produce an iron with a carbon content of about 0.10 per cent, and after the slag has been removed a charge with excess of carbon or a carbonaceous material alone may be added to the iron in the same or another furnace, if desired after a new slag has been formed on the iron.
