Abstract

252,017. Cornelius, H. G. E. May 11, 1925, [Convention date]. Extracting. - In a method of obtaining lowcarbon iron and alloys thereof, from oxide ores by reduction in an electric furnace or briquettes of finely-divided ore and reducing agents which are wholly or partly carbonaceous, the reducing agent is used in an amount less than that theoretically required for the reduction of the whole of the ore present. The deficiency may be 5 per cent or more. A number of charts may be used, one. containing iron ore and the others ores of alloying metals. The slag in the electric furnace may be made viscous or its electric conductivity decreased by suitable additions, and the metallic oxides therein may be reduced by the addition of ferro-silicon or other reducing agents prior to tapping; and the temperature of the furnace may be increased by operating the furnace prior to tapping with resistance and with the electrodes immersed in the slag. The additions to the slag may be in briquette form. The molten metal obtained may be deoxidized during or after tapping by lowcarbon additions such as ferro-manganese. Specification 227,435 is referred to.
