Abstract
240,473. Flodin, H. G., and Gustafsson, E. G. T. Sept. 24, 1924, [Convention date]. Alloys; briquetting processes.-Alloys of iron with other metals, for example chromium, are made directly from oxide ores, using reducing agents which are wholly or partly carbonaceous, by making separate charges of each of the ores together with its appropriate amount of reducing agent, and melting in an electric furnace the required amounts of the two kinds of charges. The materials are preferably finely divided and briquetted, and such briquettes may be dried or hardened before reduction. Lime may be used as a binder. If two or more metals are to be alloyed with iron, separate briquettes of the oxides may be prepared, or the oxides may be mixed before briquetting. The iron ore briquettes and the other ore briquettes may be melted together or separately, the reduced metals in the latter case being alloyed with each other in the furnace in the desired proportions. Deoxidation of the produced alloy or of either of the reduced metals may be effected by the addition of briquetttes containing manganese ore and a reducing agent. Slag may be withdrawn from time to time, and prior to tapping may be deoxidized. The proportions of carbon in the different charges may be so arranged that the product produced directly has the desired proportion of carbon; or iron may first be produced having a low percentage of carbon and the other metal made with such a percentage of carbon as to give the desired final product; or a product as low in carbon as possible may be made and afterwards carburized. The product may have added to it further amounts of the same or other alloying metals. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the production of alloys of other metals of the iron group. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
