Abstract
710,135. Friction gearing. KLOPPER, A. Oct. 31, 1951 [April 18, 1951], No. 25444/51. Class 80 (1) A non-rotatable shaft 1 is axially moved by a motor 6 which rotates a carrier 7 in which are mounted two or more rollers 3 frictionally engaging the shaft, the rollers being freely rotatable about axes, whose inclination to the shaft axis may be fixed, adjustable when stationary, or variable during, rotation of the carrier. The rollers may be spring-pressed .against the shaft, inward movement being limited by stops 14 so that the rollers are disengaged when a reduced portion 13 of the shaft is reached. The yokes carrying the rollers 3 may be mounted on triangular plates 10 supported so as to tilt and clamp the rollers to the shaft. Movement of the shaft may operate switch means controlling the motor or mechanical means to alter the inclination of the rollers so that the shaft movement is reversed. It is stated that the shaft may be curved or may form a closed ring. and that the carrier 7 may be rotated by belong or gearing. The drive may be employed in change-speed gearing or for reciprocating carriages or raising loads.
