Abstract
590,283. Machine guns. BIRMING- HAM SMALL ARMS CO., PERRY, C. A., and WACKROW, R. D. Jan. 29, 1945, No. 2212. [Class 92 (ii)] Relates to remote control devices for controlling the operation of a mechanism such as the firing mechanism of a machine gun, and comprises a pivotally mounted support, such as a gun cradle 5, for the mechanism, a member such as an arm 9 movable relatively to the mechanism for actuating it, and means such as a lever 37 for moving the member relatively to the mechanism through the medium of a compound planetary system, the arrangement being such that upon pivotal movement of the support 5 relative movement between the member or arm 9 and the mechanism is prevented if lever 37 is held stationary. The drawing shows a sectional plan view through the trunnion 3 of the gun cradle 5, Through the trunnion, which is mounted in a fixed bearing 1, is a shaft 11 having a pinion 13 meshing with teeth on the arm 9, this arm being pivoted on the gun and serving, when moved, to actuate the firing mechanism. Rotatable on shaft 11 is a spider 19, and rotatable on a sleeve 17 of the spider is a sun pinion 23 which rotates with trunnion 3. One set of gears 21 on the three arms of the spider mesh with the pinion and also with internal teeth of a fixed annulus 27, and another set of gears mesh with a pinion 31 keyed to the shaft and also' with another annulus 29 which can be rotated on the shaft by lever 37 under the control of a foot pedal. In operation, if lever 37 is held stationary and the gun elevated about its trunnions,- the shaft 11 will be rotated with and through the same angle, and thus arm 9 will not rotate about its shaft to actuate the firing mechanism. If lever 37 is moved to rotate annulus 29 the pinion 31 will be moved by gears 28 on the spider and will thus rotate the shaft 11 which will move arm 9 to effect firing.
