Abstract
726,382. Variable-speed gearing. SOC. ANON DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY & CIREY. July 10, 1953 [July 10, 1952]. Addition to 680,812. Class 80 (2). Continuously-variable gearing between driving and driven shafts 5, 14 comprises ball planets 35 carried by shaft 14 and engaging races in plates 11, 12, plate 12 being fast on shaft 5 while plate 11 is free and driven from a plate 10 through rollers 15 of adjustable inclinations engaging toric races in the plates 10, 11, and plate 10 is driven from shaft 5 through balls 34 engaged between a channel 10a in plate 10 and cam recesses 6a in a collar 6 secured to shaft 5 so as to provide torque-responsive axial loading of the gear members and subject shaft 15 to tension. The rollers 15 are loose on spindle 17 pivoted at one end through angle brackets 17b on pins 18 secured in a common sleeve 4 slidable on shaft 5, the other flattened end of each spindle being slidable in a radial slot 1a in the casing 1. One of the brackets 17b is extended at 52 and secured to a member 19 having a universal connection 50, 53 to one end of a rod 20, the other end of which is spherically mounted in the casing at 21, 54 and to which is pivoted a hollow control arm 23. A knob 49 journaled in the arm 23 carries a pinion 34 held in engagement with a circular rack 25 by a leaf spring 26 so that, by turning the knob, the arm 23 can be swung in a horizontal plane to adjust the inclination of the rollers 15.
