Abstract
The invention comprises 4-isothiocyanate-2-hydroxybenzoic acid, its salts, especially the alkali metal and alkaline earth salts and its esters, such as the lower alkyl esters wherein the alkyl group has 1-4 carbon atoms. They are prepared by reacting 4-amino-2-hydroxybenzoic acid or its salts or esters with thiophosgene, suitably at 0-5 DEG C., in water or an aqueous organic solvent and if desired in the presence of an acid-binding agent. In examples, thiophosgene is reacted with 4-amino-2-hydroxybenzoic acid and with its methyl ester to give 4-isothiocyanate-2-hydroxybenzoic acid and its methyl ester.
