Abstract

Urea derivatives of the formula: <FORM:0950254/C2/1> in which R1 is an alkyl radical of 1-4 carbon atoms, R2 is an alkyl radical of 1-4 carbon atoms which may be the same as or different from R1, m is 0 or 1 and n is 0-3, are prepared by treating urea derivatives of the formula: <FORM:0950254/C2/2> where m and n are as above, in the presence of an alkali, with two mols. of an alkylating agent or one mol. each of two alkylating agents, the or each alkylating agent containing 1-4 carbon atoms. Specified alkylating agents are dialkyl sulphates, alkyl halides or alkyltoluene sulphonates. The reaction may be effected at 10-90 DEG C. in aqueous alkaline suspension or in a mixture of an aqueous alkali and an organic solvent, a number of which are specified. Examples are given of the preparation of N -4- chlorophenyl -N1- methoxy -N1- methylurea, N-3, 4-dichlorophenyl -N1- methoxy -N1- methylurea and N-4-chlorophenyl -N1- methoxy -N1- n - butylurea.
