Abstract
Artificial threads are produced by extruding a solution of an acrylonitrile polymer in a water-miscible organic solvent into an aqueous solution of potassium acetate of concentration from 20 per cent. up to saturation point. The polymer may be a homopolymer of acrylonitrile or a copolymer thereof with a minor proportion of another polymerizable compound, e.g. styrene, methyl acrylate or vinyl acetate. The solvent may be dimethyl formamide and the solution may comprise between 15 and 20 per cent. of the polymer. The temperature of the coagulating bath may be from room temperature to 50 DEG C. The coagulated product may be stretched up to 1,000 per cent. in glycerol at temperatures between 100 and 140 DEG C., or stretched up to 40 per cent. in air at temperatures between 15 and 40 DEG C. and then hot-stretched to give a total stretch up to 1,520 per cent. After stretching, the filaments may be washed and dried without tension in air at 65 DEG C. or cut into staple fibres which are washed and then dried. Examples are given. Specifications 459,596, 461,675, 583,939, 584,548 and U.S.A. Specification 2,467,553 are referred to.
