Abstract

977,942. Polyacrylonitrile filaments. MONSANTO CO. Jan. 2, 1961 [Jan. 4, 1960], No. 84/61. Addition to 888,496. Drawings to Specification. Heading B5B. Polyacrylonitrile filaments are produced by extruding a solution of polyacrylonitrile from a spinneret into the atmosphere so as to evaporate a portion of the solvent, then passing through a coagulating and stretching bath of 20-100% of water and 80-0% of solvent at- 20‹ to - 40‹ C., passing the resulting bundle of filaments through a stretching bath of hot water, and optionally allowing the filaments to relax in boiling water or a hot gaseous atmosphere. The filaments may be washed after passage through each bath. The filaments may be formed from at least 80% of acrylonitrile and up to 20% of a mono-olefinic monomer copolymerizable therewith. The solvent may be N,N-dimethyl formamide or acetamide.
