Abstract

705,002. Selective firing of explosive charges. SOC. DE PROSPECTION ELECTRIQUE PROCEDES SCHLUMBERGER. Dec. 12, 1951 [Jan. 30, 1951], No. 29147/51. Classes 9(1) and 85 In an arrangement for 'the selective firing in sequence of a plurality of charges of explosive, particularly charges for operating apparatus in boreholes such as the sample taking means of a sampling tool, wherein the electrical firing of a charge produces the mechanical priming of an adjacent charge, the unprimed charges are divided into groups, each group R 1 , R 2 , R 3 being inserted into one of a corresponding number of electric circuits 1, 2, 3 which cannot be fed simultaneously. Before the firing operation one charge R 1-1 , R 2-2 , belonging to each of the different circuits, minus one, is primed; on firing a primed charge R 1-1 it mechanically primes a desired charge R 3-1 in the circuit having no primed charge. In the event of a misfire the firing sequence can be maintained, the arrangement being such that the primed charge to be next fired after the misfired charge can prime a charge in each of the unprimed circuits. Before priming the igniters are earthed at both ends. The firing of a charge results in the priming of, at the most, one charge in each series. In the embodiment shown of the sampling tool, on the firing of charge 6-1, sampling means 7-1, which is connected by a cable 8-1 to the body 5 of the tool, is ejected and, in the drawing out of cable 8-1, pulls wire 12-3 that is connected to it clear of the spring contact 10-3 of the igniter R, of charge 6-3, allowing contact 10-3 to engage with the electric cable 3 of firing system. Wire 12-3 passes through cable 8-2 of means 8-1, so that in the event of the misfire of charge 6-1 the subsequent firing of charge 6-2 will prime igniter R 3 . The system may be suitably modified to allow for more than two consecutive misfires.
