Abstract
704,084. Magnetic brakes. BAILEY METERS & CONTROLS, Ltd. Jan. 8, 1951 [Jan. 7, 1950], No. 501/51. Class 103(1) [Also in Groups XXXII and XXXV] A motion controlling or damping device for preventing relative motion between two members comprises an arrangement, as shown in Fig. 2, wherein a piston 32 connected to one member, is slidable in a cylinder 30 containing a mixture of para-magnetic fluid, such as oil, and iron particles, movement of the piston 32 being prevented or damped as,desired by energizing an electromagnet coil 33 so as to prevent or restrict flow of the fluid through a pipe 51 connecting the two ends of the cylinder. As shown in Fig. 1, the device 8 is linked by a rod 7 to the lever mechanism connecting a power cylinder 5 to a damper valve 2 in the air duct from a fan 4 supplying a furnace. In Fig. 3 the device is shown as used to control the movement of a rod 7 between certain limiting positions, these positions depending on the energization of the magnetizing coil by engagement of contacts 63, 64 by members 65 and 66 on the rod. Indicators lamps 20, shown when the device is operative.
