Abstract
702,660. Cables. PIRELLI SOC. PER AZIONI. Feb. 17, 1953 [July 15, 1952], No. 4412/53. Class 36 The plastic-insulated core 2 of a submarine cable is passed through a device which deforms it into a cylindrical helix of small radius having the same axis as the cable, and at the same time applies a winding or lapping of tape, yarn or string 3 so as to obtain a substantiallycylindrical assembly over which the normal serving 4 and armouring are applied. The device may comprise supporting pulleys 6, 7 and a deforming roller 8, the tape being supplied from reel 9 over guide 10. The axis of the roller 8 lies at an angle to the axes of the pulleys, but in a plane parallel to that containing the axes of the pulleys. The device is rotated about the geometrical axis of the core so -the latter is drawn through, so that the core is deformed into a cylindrical helix and at the same time wound with tape 3. The pulleys 6, 7 and roller 8 can be fixed or rotatable about their axes, and the latter may be used to guide the tape in which case the roller 10 is omitted. The pulleys 6, 7 may be replaced by two fixed dies through which the cable core passes, Fig. 4 (not shown).
