Abstract
701,759. Bulkheads and framing. ALBIACH V. Aug. 14, 1951 [Dec. 6, 1950; Jan. 25, 1951], No. 19134/51. Class 113(2) In a hull construction for tankers comprising one or more longitudinal bulkheads 25 lying on each side of the centre line of the ship, the scantlings of the bulkheads not being substantially greater than is necessary to resist the stresses imposed by the liquid cargo, and bottom and deck girders 5, 4, arranged in the plane of each bulkhead, the scantlings of the girders are substantially greater than would be required merely to resist 'the stresses imposed by the liquid cargo so as to enable them to share in the structural strength of the main hull structure. The longitudinal bulkheads, and also transverse bulkheads forming the transverse walls of the individual tanks, are of corrosion-resisting material, and may be formed with vertical corrugations, the depth of which progressively increases from the top to the bottom of the bulkhead. When a flat bulkhead is employed the stiffeners 21 (Fig. 11) connected to the bulkhead 22 may be formed with notches 23 at top and bottom to allow the bulkhead to deflect, as at 24, or alternatively increased flexibility may be obtained by bending the bulkhead at its extremities as shown at 26 and 27 in Fig. 13. The frame reinforcement members 28, 30 are attached to the deck transverse members 8 and the bottom transverse members 7 independently of the bulkhead. To preserve the continuity of transverse members passing through a longitudinal bulkhead, or of longitudinal members passing through a transverse bulkhead (Fig. 5), a connecting member 14 secured to the members 12 passes through a collar 15 secured to the bulkhead. The transverse frame 32 (Fig. 16) is reinforced by a bar 33 shaped to conform to the frame and then secured thereto.
