Abstract
Urea-formaldehyde resins are rendered chemically resistant by incorporation of up to 30 per cent. of resinous epoxides prepared by condensation of dihydric phenols with epichlorhydrin or dichlorhydrin in alkaline medium. Catalysts for hardening the resinous epoxide e.g. amines such as dimethylaminoethanol, or bis 1,3-dimethylaminoisopropanol may also be added. The urea formaldehyde resin may be alkylated e.g. with butanol. In the example to 100 parts of a butanol solution of a urea-formaldehyde condensate are added 4 parts of a condensate from p.p1-dichlorodiphenyldimethyl methane and epichlorhydrin. 4 parts of a 1 per cent. benzene solution of bis-1.3-dimethylamino-iso-propanol are also added. The result is a baking lacquer yielding films resistant to attack by acetic acid and caustic soda.
