Abstract

Compounds containing more than one epoxy group per molecule are prepared by reacting a chlorhydrin with at least one isomer of octochlorodihydroxydiphenyl in an alkaline medium. The preferred alkaline medium is aqueous NaOH and chlorhydrins mentioned are epichlorhydrin and glycerol dichlorhydrin. Other compounds which do not react with the octochloro compound but which do react with a chlorhydrin to form a polyepoxide may be added to the reagents, e.g. bisphenol A. The resins preferably contain at least 50% chlorine by weight, and can be hardened with known hardening agents. In the examples: (6) such a resin is dissolved in methyl ethyl ketone, and maleic anhydride is added; a glass plate is coated with the solution; (7) maleic anhydride is dissolved in such a resin, tri-n-butylamine is added, and the mixture is then poured into a mould coated with polyvinyl alcohol, and heated; (8) the same resin is dissolved in pentachloridephenyl, and N,N1-diethylamino-3-propylamine is added. The hardened resins char in the flame of a blow-pipe but are self-extinguishing. Specifications 741,870, 744,388, 773,655, French Specifications 1,154,500, 1,180,194 and 1,229,815 are referred to.ALSO:According to Example 6, a resin prepared from mixed isomers of octochlorodihydroxydiphenyl and epichlorohydrin was dissolved in methyl ethyl ketone, maleic anhydride was added to the solution, and the composition was coated on a glass plate, dried in the open air and heated for 16 hours at 150 DEG C. Specifications 741,870, 744,388, 773,655 and French Specifications 1,154,500, 1,180,194 and 1,229,815 are referred to.
