Abstract

Hardenable resinous products are obtained by condensing a di- or poly-urethane with formaldehyde or an agent yielding formaldehyde. The condensation may be effected in a neutral, acid or alkaline medium. Hardening-agents may be added to the resins or resin solutions; the resins may be hardened by heating. A solution of the resin may be directly obtained by conducting the condensation in the presence of an organic solvent or by adding a solvent after a preliminary condensation and distilling off water. In their soluble form the resins are suitable for lacquers, agglutinants, coatings, &c. The condensation products, with or without fillers, may be used for plastics. Products from thiodiglycol-di-urethane resemble linoxyn and may be employed for floor coverings. Specified urethanes are di-urethanes from ethylene glycol, 1 : 3-butylene glycol, hexandiol, thiodiglycol, diethanolamine, di-glycol, butylene glycol methylal, and aromatic di-alcohols such as 1 : 3 : 4 : 6-tetramethyl - 4 : 6 - dihydroxy - benzene; the tri-urethane of triethanolamine; and the tetraurethane of pentaerythrite. Examples are given of the preparation of condensation products from the di-urethanes of 1 : 3-butylene glycol, 1 : 6-hexandiol, thiodiglycol, and 1 : 3 : 4 : 6-tetramethyl - 4 : 6 - dihydroxy - benzene.
