700,395. Tractor driving gear. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. Nov. 16, 1951 [Nov. 17, 1950], No. 26913/51. Class 79(2) [Also in Group XXIV] A tractor has between the power plant and the change speed gear box a torque amplifying means comprising an epicyclic gear including separately operable control means and arranged so that the torque transmitted to the change speed gear box may be varied without interrupting the drive to the road wheels. The epicyclic gear includes a controllable normally stationary reaction member arranged so that increased torque is obtained by permitting rotation of the said reaction member. As shown in Fig. 1 power is transmitted from an internal-combustion engine 10 to the road wheels 6 via a disc clutch 16, a torque-amplifying epicyclic gear 46 and a change speed gear box 150. The epicyclic gear has a driving shaft 19, Fig. 2, to which is splined a sun pinion assembly 56, 58. The sun pinion 58 meshes with planetary pinions 66 connected by pins 68 to a planet carrier 70 rotatably mounted on the driving shaft 19. The pinions 66 mesh with an annulus 74 rotatable on the hub 78 of the carrier 70. Annulus 74 has a peripheral friction surface 80 engageable by a brake band 82 actuated by a linkage 100 from a hand lever 108. The pins 68 are also connected to an annulus 114 meshing with planetary pinions 118 connected by pins 120 to a planet carrier 124 integral with the output shaft 62. The annulus 114 has an external cylindrical surface 126 associated with a one-way clutch including a number of cam members which resist rotation of the annulus 114 in one direction. For normal operation the brake band 82 is applied to the friction surface 80 to hold the annulus 74 stationary so as to drive the annulus 114, the latter together with the sun 56 driving the carrier 124 and shaft 62. When a higher torque is required the brake is released from the annulus 74 and the annulus 114 is held from backward rotation by the one way clutch so that the sun 56 drives the carrier 124 at reduced speed.
