Abstract
235,291. Escott, A. E. March 10, 1924. Clutches and speed-varying mechanism.-The apparatus described in Specification 210,808 comprising paddles 4, Fig. 1, mounted on spindles 3 having planet pinions 9 meshing with a sun-wheel 8, is modified by the provision of additional larger planet pinions 12 meshing with a smaller sun-wheel 13 which is prevented from reverse rotation by a pawl 16 or an automatically or manually applied brake. The drum 1 may be stationary, in which case the sun-wheel 8 is mounted on a driven shaft. In a modification, the sun-wheels are mounted on the driving and driven shafts, and the discs 5, 6 carrying the planet pinions are carried by a sleeve 6<a>, Fig. 3, prevented from reverse rotation by a pawl and ratchet wheel 6<b> or by a brake. The automatic brake comprises a band 18, Fig. 2, connected to a lever 20, the brake being applied to its drum, when the latter rotates in the direction of the arrow, by a cam shoulder 26 acting on a lever 24.
