Abstract
698,958. Roller weighting arrangements. T.M.M. (RESEARCH), Ltd., HAYTHORNTHWAITE, J. J., and CALVERT, J. Feb. 19, 1952 [March 1, 1951], No. 5037/51. Class 120(ii) In a textile drafting apparatus the upper rollers are mounted in an arm pivoted to a fixed support, with which arm there is associated a mechanical reaction member which, when the arm is in the operative position, bears against a second mechanical reaction member at a point so located with respect to the pivoted axis of said arm as to bring about a turning movement about said axis, imparting a downwardly acting loading force to the said rollers by the resultant compression of springs housed in said arm and arranged to bear upon the respective upper drafting rollers. The drafting mechanism comprises upper rollers 1, 3, 9 and lower rollers 2, 4, 10, the roller 4 serving to drive an apron 5 which passes around a tensor bar 6 and a weighted tension roller 7. A slip roller 8 rests upon the apron 5 close to the nose of the tensor bar 6. The upper rollers are made in aligned pairs joined as a unit by a common arbor by which each pair of rollers is mounted in a bearing 14. The bearings 14 are slidably mounted within a channel-sectioned arm 12 pivoted upon a rail 20 which extends longitudinally of the machine. The bearings 14 are retained in place by setscrews 16. A spring clip 13 retains the arbors 11 within the bearings 14. Each bearing 14 comprises a compression spring 18 placed between a screw threaded plug 19 and a pressure pad 17. The channel sectioned arm 12 is of elbowed formation and is provided at 24 with a pivoted abutment 25 having a hardened inset contact member 26. Fixed to the rail 20 is a collar 29 also having a hardened inset contact member 31. When the rollers are in the operative position, Fig. 1, the arm 12 may be depressed against the action of the springs 18 and the member 25 swung so that the insets 26 and 31 abut against each other, thus retaining the arm in this position and providing a loading pressure for the rollers. A dust cover 34 may also be provided upon the pivot 24. Detents 32 and 33 may be provided in the reaction members 25 and 29 to hold the pivoted arm in the open position as shown in Fig. 2. In a modification, the pivoted reaction. member is provided on the roller arm pivot or another fixed member adjacent thereto whilst the fixed abutment is carried on the supporting arm.
