Abstract

698,922. Lighting fittings. QUARZLAMPEN GES. Oct. 24, 1951 [Oct. 27, 1950], No. 24860/51. Class 75(iv) An apparatus for illuminating a surgical operating area comprises a casing 2 containing six or more preferably similar lamp units 1, each formed by a light source 3 and a reflector 4, arranged symmetrically around the axis of the casing so that the beams intersect on the axis, and means are provided for adjusting the concentration of the light rays from each unit to provide a converging, parallel or diverging beam. The adjusting means may be adapted to displace each light source with respect to the focus of its reflector and to be operated from outside the casing. Alternatively each source consists of an incandescent lamp with two filaments each arranged in different relation to the focus of the reflector and one or other of the filaments of each lamp is energized by a single switch common to all the lamps or by a. separate switch for each lamp. In the latter case all the switches are operated by a single handwheel 19. Each lamp unit is also aranged to be angularly displaced in the radial plane through the casing to vary the point of intersection of the beams with the axis of the casing. For this purpose each lamp unit is supported by a hinge or, as shown, the bulb of each unit extends through a radial slot in an arcuate bracket 10 and is connected to a carrier 11 slidable on the bracket. A rod 16 connects each unit to a ring 12 which is rotatably mounted at the centre of the casing and which has a gear segment engaged by a pinion 13 on the end of an operating rod 14 extending to the outside of the casing and provided with a handwheel 15. The connecting rods 16 may be replaced by cords, in which case springs for returning the units are also fitted. The handwheel 15 for tilting the lamp units is located adjacent the handwheel 19 for operating the switches, the operating rod 14 extending through a tube connecting the handwheel 19 with the switches and passing through one of two bearings 22 connecting the casing to a stirrup 7 fixed to the ceiling. The casing comprises two cup-shaped halves 5, 6, the lower half 5 having light emission apertures covered by discs 23 made of glass protective against heat. A. further lamp unit is rigidly mounted at the centre of the casing.
