[Classes 75 (iii) and 75 (iv)] [Also in Group VI] A lighting apparatus, particularly for use in hospital operating rooms, is provided with a reflector which carries a source of ultra violet radiations of sufficient intensity to reduce the possibility of infection occurring during an operation. The lamp unit is pivoted in the bifurcated arm 10 on one end of the shaft 9 which has a counterweight 12 at the other end. The shaft is rotatably supported in a cylindrical block 8 which is pivoted in a forked arm 7 at the end of an off-set support 5 rotatably secured to a ceiling flange. This arrangement permits almost universal movement for the lamp unit. The lamp 18 is supported at the axis of a framework 14 which carries a number of inclined trapezoidal mirrors 15. An annular Fresnel lens 19 surrounds the lamp 18, and a heat-intercepting cylinder 24 is arranged between the lamp and the lens to cut down the infra-red rays. Heated air is therefore constantly rising through the lamp unit and this movement is assisted by the open dome. The lower part 29 of the frame 14 is turned inwards, and a parabolic reflector 30 is arranged above it to form a channel containing ultra-violet radiation lamps 25, 26. The arrangement is such that the ultra-violet rays occupy the same conical space as the luminous rays from the lamp 18. The ultra-violet ray lamps are supplied from the lighting circuit through a transformer with variable tappings or with a variable rheostat.
