Abstract
698,591. Wave-guide switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Oct. 25,1951 [Nov. 3,1950; Feb. 27,1951], No. 24975/51. Class 40 (viii). An automatic wave-guide switch comprises a wall 17 having a resonant iris formed therein having a capacitative part, and a tube 23 closes this part of the iris, and contains an ionizable gas, which may be ionized when the voltage across the capacitative part is sufficient, and close the iris to electromagnetic waves. As shown, the iris consists of two circular openings 21 which have an inductive effect, joined by a slot which has a capacitative effect. A transmitter 10 is connected to an aerial 12 by a waveguide 11, and a receiver 14 is connected to guide 11 by a branch guide 13 containing an ordinary T.R. switch 15 and a resonator 16 having slits in opposite walls provided with tubes 23 as described. The tubes may be cemented in the slits and contain a filling of one of the rare gases. They may, in addition, be packed with quartz fibres. An anti-T.R. switch 18 of similar construction is connected in the transmitter connection.
