Abstract

698,175. Vehicle body mountings. JOHNSON, E. April 6, 1951 [April 6, 1950], No. 8650/50. Class 108 (ii). [Also in Group XXXI] In a vehicle axle mounting in which the axle is centrally pivoted, about a fore and aft axis of the vehicle, between a pair of support members carried by the vehicle frame, the support members consist of spaced cross members having downwardly extending end portions and parallel central portions which receive between them the axle and bear against the sides of the axle to hold it against movement otherwise than pivotal movement. As shown, channel-sectioned support members 2 are secured to the chassis frame and have the end portions 2a and central portions 4, the central portions 4 carrying bearing blocks 8, between which is a pivot pin 5, the pin being secured to the blocks by set screws 9 and nuts 10. On the pin between the members 2 is mounted the axle 1 carrying the steerable wheels of the vehicle. The support members 2 are interconnected by screws 7 so that the distance between them can be adjusted and the portions 4 bear on the axle. In a modification. Fig. 3 (not shown), the axle is of I-section and carries side plates or bearing members in rubbing contact with the central portions of the support members. The axle may be further stabilized by radius rods.
