Abstract

Textile lubricants free from water and inorganic salts are prepared by distilling the water for example, under sub-atmospheric pressure, from the neutralized sulphonation product of a fatty acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms or an ester thereof, blending the residue with lubricating oil and separating undissolved inorganic salts from the product. Oleic acid is the preferred fatty acid, and esters referred to are vegetable or animal oils or fats, for example rice oil, olive oil and peanut oil. The neutralized sulphonation product of a mixture of mineral oil, vegetable oil and fatty acid is particularly mentioned. The sulphonating agent may be oleum and the neutralizing agent an aqueous solution of an alkali, for example sodium or potassium hydroxide. The inorganic salts may be separated from the lubricating composition by filtration, using a filter aid such as diatomaceous earth or bentonite. An alkyl phenol, for example diamyl phenol, may be included in the sulphonation mixture. Lubricating oils referred to are mineral, animal or vegetable oils and mixtures thereof. Specifications 649,148 and 644,415 are referred to.
