Abstract

An emulsifying agent, for use in making water-emulsifiable organic liquid compositions, comprises a mixture of (a) a polyethenoxy compound of the general formula R(OC2H4)nOH, where R is the residue of a compound ROH containing at least 10 carbon atoms and at least one carboxyl or hydroxyl group, and (b) up to an equal weight of a calcium, magnesium, or zinc salt of a sulphosuccinic diester of the general formula <FORM:0738667/III/1> where R is a straight or branched chain alkyl residue containing from 6-10 carbon atoms or the cyclohexyl radical. Suitable polyethenoxy compounds are derived from alkylated phenols, higher alcohols, fatty acids, ether alcohols, and fatty acid monoethanol amides, e.g. dodecyl phenol, alkylated beta-naphthol, oleic acid, or castor oil. The calcium, magnesium, or zinc salt (which is preferably of sulpho-succinic dioctyl ester) may be formed by dissolving the corresponding sodium salt in the liquid to be emulsified, mixing with an excess of a concentrated aqueous solution of a calcium, magnesium, or zinc salt, and discarding the aqueous layer which separates. For the preparation of emulsions useful in the textile industry and as fat solvents, the organic liquid may be trichloroethylene, tetrahydronaphthalene, or decahydronaphthalene. Emulsifiable compositions for plant spraying contain D.D.T., benzene hexachloride, 2,4-dinitro-o-cresol, esters of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T, or Chlordane, dissolved in solvent naphtha, carbon tetrachloride, methylnaphthalene, xylene, or kerosene. Reference is made to the preparation of textile and cutting oils and Example 6 relates to an emulsifiable light lubricating oil. The emulsions formed are stable even when using soft or distilled water.ALSO:Emulsifiable compositions for use in plant spraying consist of an organic liquid in which is dissolved an emulsifying agent comprising a mixture of (a) a polyethenoxy compound of the general formula R(OC2H4)nOH, where R is the residue of a compound ROH containing at least 10 carbon atoms and at least one carboxyl or hydroxyl group, and (b) up to an equal weight of a calcium, magnesium, or zinc salt of a sulphosuccinic diester of the general formula <FORM:0738667/VI/1> where R is a straight or branched chain alkyl residue containing from 6-10 carbon atoms or the cyclohexyl radical. Suitable polyethenoxy compounds are derived from alkylated phenols, higher alcohols, fatty acids, ether alcohols, and fatty acid monoethanol amides, e.g. dodecyl phenol, alkylated beta-naphthol, oleic acid, or castor oil. The calcium, magnesium, or zinc salt (which is preferably of sulphosuccinic dioctyl ester) may be formed by dissolving the corresponding sodium salt in the liquid to be emulsified, mixing with an excess of a concentrated aqueous solution of a calcium, magnesium, or zinc salt, and discarding the aqueous layer which separates. The compositions may contain D.D.T., benzene hexachloride, 2,4-dinitro-o-cresol, esters of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T, or Chlordane, dissolved in solvent naphtha, carbon tetrachloride, methylnaphthalene, xylene, or kerosene.
