Abstract
697,612. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BREADNER, R. L., DUDDING, B. P., and SIMMS, C. H. Sept. 6, 1951 [June 13, 1950], No. 14776/50. Class 39(i) A vitreous part of an envelope is sealed to a metal part through an annular flexible metal ring which is arranged between the vitreous part and a metal shoulder on the metal part, is sealed to the vitreous part where the latter abuts against the shoulder and is sealed at its other extended end within the shoulder. The metal shell 1 of a cathode-ray tube is provided with a shoulder 2 to which is cold-welded, hard-soldered, or glass cemented a copper ring 4. The glass plate 3, carrying the fluorescent screen, is locally heated at its flattened edge 7 and pressed against the ring to seal it thereto at its inner periphery and cause the ring to conform to the shape of the shoulder 2 whilst the shell 1. and plate 3 are heated to just below the annealing temperature of the plate. The glass neck 8 is sealed to a flange 10 on the shell. The plate 3, Fig. 2, may have a rib 12 sealed into a trough 13 formed in a thickened part of the ring 4. The order of sealing the ring to the glass and metal parts may be reversed and the aperture in the shell may be rectangular. The ring may be provided with a protected cover and when made of foil is extended over the edge of an aluminium shell to be sandwiched between the shell and a metal annulus cold-welded to the shell.
