694,833. Valves. GOTTLOB MACK & RHEINHOLD BACHOFER. Aug. 21, 1951, No. 19741/51. Class 135 A valve comprises a closure member 4, Fig. 1, movable by a stem 3, which slides in the body 1, to engage a seat 7, the member carrying a resilient seal 5 having a recess 9 surrounded by a peripheral lip 10 whereby inlet pressure urges the lip against the seat when the valve is closed. The stem is movable by an eccentric pin 13, which so limits the stroke of the closure member that negligible force is exterted by the seal against the seat, the pin extending from a rotatable boss 12 having a handle 11. A resilient sleeve 17 surrounds the stem and is fitted in compression so that when the valve is closed, inlet pressure acting on the seal 5 is substantially counterbalanced. In a modification, the seal is formed as the seat, and urged by inlet pressure against a non- resilient closure member when the valve is closed. The valve body may be formed with a straight passageway in which the closure member co-acts with an inclined seat. In another arrangement, the seal and resilient sleeve are in one piece and the valve closes in the direction of flow. In a further arrangement, the closure member comprises a resilient disc 48, Fig. 6, having a peripheral lip 50, pressed against a seat 47, by inlet pressure when the valve is closed, the spindle 51, being sealed by a diaphragm 53, so dimensioned that inlet pressure acting on it counter-balances the inlet pressure acting on the member 48. In yet another arrangement, the spindle is sealed by a diaphragm inserted under compression to balance the inlet pressure on the closure member. The eccentric pin may be replaced by a pin movable in a helical slot in the body.
