A machine for continuously plasticising stockings and other shaped textile articles made of nylon or other polyamide material, comprises an endless conveyer 10 carrying forms for the reception of the articles and a pair of spray boxes 13, or other means for impregnating the articles with water or other liquid, spaced along the conveyer run : the conveyer takes the articles on the forms, after they leave each spray box 13 and before they reach the other spray box, firstly through a pre-heating chamber 15 in which the articles and forms are pre-heated to a predetermined temperature, and secondly through a plasticising chamber in which the articles are subjected to the combined action of moisture or steam and radiant heat in known manner. The use of a pre-heating chamber reduces the time the articles need to spend in the plasticising chamber. Steam or other radiators, or circulating hot air, under thermostatic control, may be used in chambers 15. Infra-red lamps 17, Fig. 1, or superheated steam pipes, may be used to provide the radiant heat in chambers 16 ; alternatively, the forms 11, Fig. 2, may pass between the inner walls 18 of the plasticising chamber 16, the space between the inner and outer walls being heated by gas jets 19. As shown, articles are loaded onto the forms at loading stations 12 and removed at stripping stations 20 ; after leaving chamber 16 and before removal at station 20 the articles may be subjected to a known conditioning treatment.
