Abstract
692,312. Constructional units for buildings. TEMPLEX HOLDINGS, Ltd. July 19, 1951 [Sept. 1, 1950], No. 21677/50. Class 20(ii) An I-section constructional unit for building purposes has one or both ends bifurcated to form limbs 3, 4, Figs. 1, 2, joined by a welded end plate 5 which is transverse to the web 2 and is formed with bolt-holes for bolting it to a similar unit or other member. Filler plates 8 and bracing elements 12 may also be welded across the bifurcated ends. The unit may be formed from an I-section of which the web is split at both ends and the ends opened out by setting off one flange 4 and leaving the other flange 3 in a straight line,. or the end limbs may be each equally offset or the offset limbs at opposite ends may be arranged on opposite sides of the centre line of the unit. Alternatively, the unit may be fabricated from two separate T- sections or from flat strip material. Fig. 5 shows the outermost bay of a multi-span building built up of the units, each roof arch being formed of units 18, 19 bolted to each other at the ridge 10, the outermost upright 20 being also formed as a unit and being bolted to the unit 18 at 16.. The end plate 5 of the unit 19 is bolted directly to the flanges of the stanchion 30. A longitudinally disposed eaves member 26 is bolted to the uprights 20 through angle cleats 26<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5a, welded across the ends of the member 26. A wide span portal frame building may comprise upright units 40, 50, Fig. 6 (not shown), and four roof truss units 41, 42 bolted end to end. The units may also be used as roof members in a saw-tooth roof, Fig. 7 (not shown).
