Abstract
690,795. Treating liquids with gases. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Oct. 9, 1951 [May 16, 1951], No. 23516/51. Class 55(ii) In bubble towers in which the contacting liquid flows across the plates and downwardly from plate to plate through downcomers, the capacity of the tower is increased by introducing into the liquid which has descended through a downcomer but which has not reached the first row of bubble caps, jets of gas or vapour from the stage below. In the form shown, a bubble tower 1 has plates 2 and 3 provided with bubble caps 5 and 7. Liquid descending through a downcomer 8 passes across plate 3, over a weir 9 into a downcomer 10 and across plate 4 to pass over a weir 11 to the stage below. A row of holes 13, 14 is provided across plates 2 and 3 so that vapour or gas from a lower stage may pass into the liquid on the plate above in the form of jets. Excessive entrainment of the liquid in the jets is prevented by baffles 15 and 16 upon which the jets impinge. The effect of the jets is to aid the passage of liquid across the tray and to reduce the downcomer liquid level, so minimizing tray flooding and allowing a higher throughput to be obtained.
