Abstract
In a process for the countercurrent contacting of gases with fluidized solid (e.g. catalyst) in a vessel having a series of superimposed zones separated by transverse perforated plates which carry dense layers of solid fluidized by gas passing through the perforations, entrainment of gas by solid passing over a weir to a lower plate through a downcomer is prevented either by inclining the upper portion of the weir towards the centre of the vessel or by providing a single aperture in the weir. The transverse perforated plates may be provided with bubble caps. As shown in Fig. 3, solid flows down the inclined portion 12 of the weir and does not impinge on the vessel wall 18. In Fig. 5 the weir 36 has a rectangular slot 37 <PICT:0698586/III/1> <PICT:0698586/III/2> through which solid passes; this slot may extend only partially along the length of the weir to provide spaces at the ends for the upward passage of gas.
