Abstract

688,450. Catheters. MERENLENDER, I. July 20, 1951, No. 17243/51. Class 81 (ii). A catheter is designed for retention in the body by expansion of its inner end, this end being provided with a number of longitudinal slits and means being provided for retracting the tip so as to cause bulging of the wall between adjacent slits. A flexible wire or thread E is attached to the inner end of the catheter tube and is also fastened to a remote part of the tube by means of a collar or helix J secured by an external clamping nut N. A collar K, secured by a similar clamping nut N<SP>1</SP>, serves to provide a finger hold for the tube, slightly inward of the nut N, and when the two are drawn apart the inner tip of the catheter tube, weakened by longitudinal slits, bulges outwards to form a retaining rim D. In the form shown, the nuts N, N' are held apart by telescopic sleeves R, S co-operating with latches Q but alternative means such as screw-threaded sleeves or sprung pawls may be used.
