Abstract
686,659. Diffusion pumps. NATIONAL RESEARCH CORPORATION. Nov. 17, 1951. No. 27029/51. Class 71. In liquid cooling means mounted externally of a vertical oil diffusion pump body 10 containing a bath 30 heated by an element 32 and at least two upper and lower jets 22, 16, and comprising an upper section e.g., a coil 38a adjacent the body top 11 and the upper jet 22, and a section 38c adjacent the boiler 28 and extending upwardly past a gap 17 between the umbrella 19 of the jet 16 and the body 10 up to about the section 38a, the flow of liquid e.g., water through the sections is so controlled e.g., by a cock 40 that the temperature of the water on reaching the gap 17 is between that at which the pump oil is free flowing and that at which the oil has an appreciable vapour pressure. A third coil section 38b surrounds a foreline 24, and an uptake tube 14 is spaced from the body 10 by a spiral 36 as described in Specification 684,470. The pump oil is a pentachlorinated diphenyl which has a viscosity less than 50,000 Saybolt universal seconds at a temperature between 77 degrees F. and 95 degrees F.
