Abstract
686,236. Raising liquids by suction; pipe joints. ROBERTSON, J. R. July 28, 1950 [July 31, 1949; March 4, 1950], Nos. 8716/49 and 5509/50. Classes 99 (i) and 102 (ii). Suction apparatus for raising fuels particularly for filling internal combustion engine fuel tanks comprises a cap 20 which is screwed into the filler cap of a vessel or tank 11 and has a liquid inlet tube 50 and a passage 22 connected through a pipe 16 with an engine induction manifold; a cylindrical float 29, slidable in a guide tube 28 controls the suction passage and has a transverse groove 32 which allows a small quantity of fuel to pass into the engine manifold so as to change the appearance of the engine exhaust and provide a visible indication that the tank is full. A cock 24 is used to close the suction and to open the tank to atmosphere. A spring-loaded relief valve prevents excessive vacuum in the tank. Liquid is conveyed to the inlet through a filter and a flexible tube 15 having a hollow body 38 containing a spring-loaded valve 39 which is opened automatically when a resilient spigot 49 is engaged in a recess 52 in the cover.
