[Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XVII] An aircraft or other petrol tank 2, Fig. 5, is filled from a supply tank 1 in a closed circuit, thus avoiding spilling of petrol and escape of inflammable gases. The apparatus may comprise only a pump 3 in the supply pipe 5 and a pipe 6, 9 for the return of gases and excess liquid to the tank 1, the pipe 6, 9 being provided with a float valve 10, which closes when liquid reaches the chamber 7, thus preventing further operation of the pump 3. The pipes 5, 6 may then be emptied by reversing the pump 3. A byepass 12 with check valve 14 may be provided, in order to avoid sudden stoppage of the pump 3 when the valve 10 closes. An air separator and filter 17, meter 18, and air byepass 19 as described in Specification 417,882 may be provided between the tank 1 and the pump 3. In order to avoid excess pressure in the tank 2, a pump 15 may be provided for drawing off gases. The pumps 3, 15 are either reversible or are provided with three-way valves for reversing the direction of flow. Excess pressure in the tank 2 may alternatively be avoided by means of a valve 27, Fig. 6, which is connected to a diaphragm 28, exposed on one side to the atmosphere and on the other side to the pressure in the tank 2. The return pipe 6 may be provided with a float valve, as in the arrangement previously described, or with a restricted orifice 31, which causes a rise in pressure when liquid commences to pass and consequent closing of the valve 27.
