Abstract

686,100. Lifting trucks; engaging stacked loads. ELECTRO-HYDRAULICS, Ltd., and SHARP, C. W. Aug. 2, 1950. [July 22, 1949; Oct. 10, 1949] Nos. 19405/59 and 25990/49. Classes 78 (iii) and 78 (iv). In a fork lift truck of the kind adapted to handle stacks of bricks, the lowest courses of which are placed between the fork tines, resilient blocks are secured to each tine so that on initial loading of said tine the blocks deform and grip the bricks. As shown in Fig. 2 (Prov.), the rubber block 25 is surrounded by a sleeve 24 which may be made of canvas or rubber and is secured to the tine 20 and guides 22. These guides engage slots 21 in the tine and have stops 23 which limit the amount of deformation of the block. In a modification (not shown) the block is dispensed with and the air in sleeve 24 constitutes the resilient member. In further modifications (also not shown), the sleeve 24 is bonded to a pair of dovetail section bars which respectively engage complementary slots in the tine and an upper bar which contacts the load, and the guides 21 can be dispensed with. The block and sleeve can have a circular, rectangular or substantially elliptical cross section. A modification of this arrangement, shown in Fig. 5 (Prov.), has a pair of block containing sleeves 31, 32 dovetailed to an upper bar 30 and a tine 20, a single guide member 22 being provided. In another modification, Fig. 1 (Comp.), the tine 40 is contained within a sleeve 42 together with the rubber block 43 and a clamping strip 46; an upper bar 44 and a further clamping strip 47 being located outside the sleeve to co-operate with strip 46 and the tine 40. This arrangement is further modified in Fig. 2 (Comp.), not shown, by forming co-operating surfaces on the upper face of tine 40 and the lower face of strip 46 to limit block deformation and to prevent tilting of the bar 44 under load.
