Abstract

686,095. Stuffing-box substitutes. BLAKEBOROUGH & SONS, Ltd., J., (Dahl, G. W.). April 16, 1949, No. 10248/49. Class 122(v) A sealing device for a shaft or rod, such as a valve rod 16, comprises a sealing member 30 of flexible non-metallic material having a body portion 31 surrounding and urged into contact with the rod by pressure of the sealed fluid, a non- rotatable sleeve 36 surrounding the rod and having a tapered annular projection 37 which engages a corresponding recess 34 in a laterally extending head portion 32 of the sealing member 30 and expands the head 32 radially inwards against a boss 26 on the valve rod housing and radially outwards against the wall of the recess 27 formed by the boss. The sealing member 30 is made of a material, such as polytetrafluoroethylene, that presents a 'waxy surface In a modification two axially spaced sealing members 30 are each forced into a recess in the valve rod housing by non-rotatable sleeves urged apart by a spring.
