Abstract

889,206. Stuffing-box substitutes. SULZER FRERES S. A. Jan. 12, 1959 [Jan. 18, 1958], No. 1054/59. Class 122 (5). A seal for sealing against the escape of a gaseous medium along a rotatable or axially slidable shaft 1 where it projects out of a housing 2, such as that of a compressor, comprises a sleeve 3 which surrounds the shaft 1 with radial clearance and is connected to the housing by a resilient member 4, a film of the gaseous medium being provided in the clearance space for the purpose not only of producing a sealing effect but of maintaining the sleeve out of contact -with the shaft. The film is formed by-the dynamic action of the shaft in drawing the medium into the clearance. The sleeve 3, because of the flexibility of the member 4 in the form of a bellows, is caused by the film to centralize itself about the shaft and follow any deflections of the latter. The resilient member 4 may be in the form of a diaphragm of corrugated or flat rubber or of conical form.
