Abstract

684,373. Stuffing-boxes. FRASER & CO., Ltd., W. J. Jan. 31, 1951, No. 2384/51. Class 122(v) A reaction vessel for chemical manufacture and having a shaft 11 rotatable therein, has a gland housing 23 for the shaft which is adjustable relatively to the vessel and has a part spherical surface 22 seated in or on a complementary surface fixed relatively to the vessel. A cover 20 adjustably bolted to the end 41 of the vessel supports an annulus 21 having a spherical surface on which the spherical surface 22 of the gland housing 23 is pressed by a holding cap 30 adjustably bolted to the cover 20 and engaging the gland housing through upper spherical surfaces 31. A space 34 between the housing 23 and the cap 30 may be filled with sealing fluid or lubricant. In a modification the upper spherical surfaces and the chamber 34 are omitted and in another the upper and lower spherical surfaces on the housing are contiguous and engage corresponding surfaces on the cover 20 and holding cap 30.
