Abstract
1309705 Shaft seal KALLE-REGULATORER AB 19 April 1971 [25 March 1970 25109/71 Heading F2B A sealing device for sealing a rotary shaft 3, e.g. of a consistency meter, in an opening in an upper wall of a container or pipe 1 filled with liquid under pressure, comprises a vessel 8 arranged over the opening, a gland 10 in the top of the vessel 8 arranged to receive the shaft 3, and means for maintaining a gas pressure in the vessel 8 so that the liquid is prevented from contacting the gland. In the device described, the shaft 3 carries a sensing member 4 in the pipe 1 and passes with clearance through a ring 5 having a groove 6. The groove 6 is covered by a diaphragm 7 and communicates via a passage 12 with a chamber 13 below a diaphragm 15 in a box 14. The groove 6, passage 12 and chamber 13 are filled with a neutral liquid. The diaphragm 15 is arranged to operate a valve 20 so that when the diaphragm 15 is raised due to a rise in the level of liquid in the vessel 8 the valve opens to admit air under pressure from a source 18 into the space 16 above the diaphragm 15, and via a conduit 17 into the space above the liquid in the vessel 8. Hence the liquid level is forced down until the valve 20 is again closed. A vent 33 prevents build-up of gas pressure in the vessel 8 due to leakage of the valve 20. The diaphragm 15 is urged downwardly by an adjustable spring 29. A pipe 11 permits rinsing fluid to be fed to the gland 10.
