Abstract
1,072,790. Porosimeters. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. Nov. 17, 1964, No. 46713/64. Heading G1S. In apparatus for determining the pore volume distribution of a solid, there is provided a fluidtight chamber 1 enclosing a container 8 for holding the sample to be tested, a bellows 10 closing one end of the chamber, the other end being closed by a seal 7 through which extends a pipe 4 connected to further pipes 34, 36. In operation, a weighed sample is placed in the container 8 and air is evacuated through pipes 4, 36 by a vacuum pump. Valve 37 is then closed and a valve 35 opened to admit mercury into space 2. Passageways 24, 15 are then filled with hydraulic fluid and the bellows expanded to force the mercury into the pores of the sample, the amount of displacement of the bellows being transmitted through means 25, 26 to a micrometer dial 27 as a measure of the pore volume distribution of the sample. A pressure gauge is provided at 32. The chamber 1 is immersed in a heated bath 28. The apparatus may be used with penetrant liquids other than mercury, e.g. carbon tetrachloride.
