V - belts are formed with a crown portion 1c, 1b to provide resistance to deformation by side pressure from the pulley groove particularly when used in co-operation with variable diameter V-pulleys. The sloping parts 1c of the crown make an angle of substantially 90 degrees, or slightly greater, with the side faces of the belt and may be straight or slightly concave.
