Abstract

681,874. Rotary meters. POTTER, D. M. Dec. 1, 1950 [Dec. 2, 1949), No. 29505/50. Class 110(ii) The rotor 16 of a meter is provided with surfaces facing upstream and downstream, in a tube 10, which co-act with fixed surfaces, the whole being arranged so that the rotor is balanced or substantially balanced axially and the bearings of the shaft 19 are practically free from end-thrust. Due to fluid flow. static and dynamic pressures acting on the rotor vanes 16a and rotor surfaces 13b, 13c tend to force the rotor downstream, but the fluid flowing through a restricted annular passage 12, having an outer fixed ring 14, and acting upstream on the surface 13c cause balancing forces to be exerted on the rotor. The rotor may have some axial freedom to allow for fluid surges or to clear the rotor vanes of a piece of foreign matter such as lint or paper. The shaft 19 is mounted in bearings carried by a shield 15 and a stream-line support 20. The speed of rotation of the rotor 16 is measured, preferably, by known electrical means comprising a ring magnet 22 and a coil 23 which is electrically connected to a tacheometer or frequency meter 24. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), the rotor is carried within a sleeve in the tube 10. The portion 13 may be hollow to reduce its weight. The tail end portion of the rotor may be of reduced diameter.
