Abstract
809,948. Whirling arm apparatus. COOKE, W. D. Nov. 30, 1956 [June 15, 1956], No. 18529/56. Divided out of 809,947. Class 4. Whirling arm apparatus comprises a member mounted to rotate an aerodynamic model about an axis, and a centrifugal fan mounted to rotate about the axis in the sense opposite to that of the model so as to set up an air flow with spiral streamlines through which the model moves. Fig. 1 shows a section of a housing 1 containing an electric motor 5 driving a hollow shaft 3 to which is fixed the fan 9 having blades 11. An annular air intake 14 surrounds the fan so as to form therewith an annular gap in which the model 19 moves. Air from the fan is sucked into intake 14 and along an annular duct 15 to a flared outlet 16 by ejector devices 17 fed by pipes 26 from a distributor 32 and pump 30 driven by an electric motor 7. The model 19 is supported by a radial arm (not shown) on a hollow shaft 4 driven by an electric motor 6. Shaft 4 also supports a pitot head on an arm 20. Electrical power supply cables and leads from test instruments e.g. strain gauges on the model, pass along a central tube 2. Shock waves rising from the model between lines A and B pass out of the housing through an annular aperture 24, the pipes 26 being of suitable cross-section. Shock waves moving down from the model between lines C and D are reflected by annular surfaces 27, 28 to pass out of the housing through an annular aperture 23, struts 25 of suitable cross-section being provided.
