Abstract

1,008,508. Rotary meters. DUKES & BRIGGS ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Dec. 11, 1963 [Dec. 12, 1962], No. 46846/62. Heading F1F. A rotary flow-meter for indicating flow, rate-of-flow or total flow of a gas or liquid in a pipeline, comprises a tubular body part 1 housing an insert 3 which mounts a field winding 9 and a conical rotor 7 having magnetised blades 8 supported in upstream and downstream bearings 17, 6 carried by spiders 5. The upstream spider is formed at its centre with a shield 12 having a conical upstream face and a recess 13 on its downstream face into which the front face of the rotor can be accepted. A hole 18 and passages 19 in the shield allow pressure fluid to act on the front face of the rotor tending to urge the rotor downstream in opposition to the fluid pressure acting on the tapered rotor face tending to urge the rotor upstream. The parts are dimensional such that these fluid pressure forces together with the drag on the blades 8 move the rotor to an equilbrium position in which thrust on the bearings is eliminated.
