681,562. Double-twist spindles. COMPTOIR DES TEXTILES ARTIFICIELS. Jan. 12, 1950 [Jan. 12, 1949], No. 842/50. Class 120(ii) Double twist spindles have the yarn package support freely mounted for rotation on a spindle shaft and carrying a circular permanent magnet incorporating a pair of upper and lower annular armatures each having a plurality of outwardly projecting pole pieces equally circumferentially spaced to co-act with a plurality of spaced curve plates of magnetic material recessed in a non- magnetic outer bowl-shaped annular member whose lower part is provided with a rotatable metal cupshaped cover, said spaced curve plates being so disposed as to complete a magnetic circuit to hold the said support stationary, said magnetic circuit including an air gap for passage of the yarn. As shown the cup member 26 carrying the magnet 43 having three projecting poles 45 spaced 120 degrees apart is secured to a sleeve 22 of synthetic resin or other non-magnetic material by rubber rings 28 and 29. The sleeve 22 is mounted on bearings 13 and 14 on a hollow tubular member 12 which is joined to the spindle shaft 5 by a conical tube 15 shrunk on to the upper end of 5 and the lower end of 12. A disc 16 carrying a steel ring 17, faced with chromium, is carried on the conical tube 15. The generally radial holes 19 pass through the disc 16 and tube 15 and register with the space between the flared lower end of tubular member 12 and the flared point 18 of the upper end of shaft 5. The lower end of shaft 5 receives the pointed end of a pin 6 carried by the support member 9 and the upper end of shaft 5 is supported by a roller bearing 11 also carried by support 9. A bowl-shaped member 46, made of synthetic resin or other non-magnetic material, is fixed to the support member 9 and has six equi-spaced thin rectangular soft iron plates 48 embedded in it, these plates co-operate with magnet 43 to hold the cup 26 and the yarn package 34 thereon against rotation when the spindle shaft 5 is rotated. The support 9 also carries a shallow sheet metal cup 50 which can be turned slightly relatively to the support. The member 46 receives three equi-spaced pins 51 which project downwardly and enter pockets 52 formed in the bottom of the cup 50. These pockets have sloping surfaces so that on rotation of the cup 50 the pins are raised against springs 54, Fig. 5, and engage the disc 16 and hold it against rotation. In use, yarn passes from the package 34 over the polished top of cone 35, down inside the cone 35, through a ball tensioning device 31, 32 into the hollow tubular member 12, out through the radial holes 19 in disc 16 and up between the magnet poles and the bowl-shaped member to the thread guide 56.
