Abstract
Crude phenolate solutions obtained from low temperature tars and having a density of 1.14-1.15/20 DEG C. are treated with steam to expel the volatile neutral oils and then with a stream of air in small bubbles at about 105 DEG C. until at least 15 per cent of water has been distilled off and the density has increased to 1.22/20 DEG C. Thus the amphoteric impurities are transformed into neutral bodies and when the free phenols are liberated with carbon dioxide they are soluble to a clear solution in dilute alkali hydroxide solutions. The process is particularly applicable to phenols derived from lignite and extracted in the crude form by the usual methods.
